The Bara Imambara, also known as the Asafi Imambara, is an iconic monument complex in Lucknow built by Nawab Asaf-ud-Daula in 1784. It serves fundamentally as an assembly hall for Shia Muslims during the mourning month of Muharram.
History
Famine Relief Project
The primary cause for the monument's massive construction was economic. Following a devastating famine in 1784, the Nawab initiated the building project solely to generate employment for the starving populace, running day and night shifts for nearly a decade.
Unsupported Roof
The central hall measures 50 meters long and 15 meters high. Incredibly, the entire massive vaulted roof consists entirely of interlocking Lakhauri bricks and stucco without the use of a single iron or wooden support pillar, making it a masterpiece of physical engineering.
The Bhool Bhulaiya
Positioned deliberately to distribute the weight of the massive unsupported roof, the upper floors consist of a complex three-dimensional labyrinth. It features nearly 1,000 interconnecting passages and 489 identical doorways designed to disorient intruders.
Significance
It remains one of the largest arched constructions in the world unsupported by beams. Historically, it reflects the zenith of Awadhi architecture before the influx of European neoclassical influences overtook the regional style.
Festivals
Muharram Observances
The complex reverts entirely to its primary religious function during Muharram. Massive local congregations gather to mourn the martyrdom of Imam Hussain, featuring extensive recitations of elegies (Marsiya) within the grand central hall.
Lucknow Mahotsav Heritage Walks
During cultural festivals, the state organizes specialized heritage walks starting from the Imambara, explaining the intricate acoustics of the labyrinth where a whisper can be heard clearly from vast distances.
Special Highlight
The complex strictly eschews stone, utilizing 'Lakhauri' bricks held together by a unique paste of urad dal, lime, and tree sap.
